Without a wetsuit or compressed air bottle: Just pass through and interactively take swarms of exotic fish with you.

The supposed underwater world is actually recessed into the window front of the building as a series of monitors. It consists of ten 40-inch displays that are strung together to make a frieze 16 metres long.

LARGE  INTERACTIVE STORE INSTALLATION IN THE SAARBRÜCKEN CITY CENTRE

INTERACTION WITH PASSERS-BY

Hidden cameras registered movements on the sidewalk. Computer algorithms translated these movements into the behavior of the digitally generated fish—creating a perfect illusion.

Hundreds of fish, some forming schools, others individually selected, followed passers-by, responding to their movements and even swimming from one screen to the next. A gigantic virtual aquarium. Caustics, light effects, the motion of underwater plants—nothing was missing.

In Saarbrücken, the location of the German-French SaarLB, this meant not only pride in a financially successful cross-border institution, but also in a digital attraction. Visitors even came from outside the region to experience the large-scale virtual aquarium up close.

The installation was in permanent operation from 2004 to 2010.
